| | SCHEDULE OF SHOWTIMES AUG 9 - AUG 15 ALL SHOWTIMES BELOW VALID BEGINNING FRI, AUGUST 9 |
| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| Another set of anticipated films—including TWO special limited engagements—arrive on Friday: - In Maiden, documentarian Alex Holmes tells the story of Tracy Edwards, who at just 24 became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. Caryn James of the Hollywood Reporter says it's "gripping and effective even if — maybe especially if — you have absolutely no interest in sailing."
- Filmmaker and actress Lynn Shelton (Hump Day, Your Sister's Sister) is back with another hilarious ensemble comedy, Sword of Trust. Guiding a largely improvised tale of strangers on a mission to sell the titular confederate sword, she gives a cast that features Marc Maron and Michaela Watkins ample chances to shine. Dennis Harvey of Variety says, "The considerable pleasure of [the film] is that everyone onscreen is so good at this kind of work that one wishes more tightly scripted comedy screenplays had such savory dialogue, or inspired character conceptions."
- Fresh from Sundance comes Them That Follow, an eerie family drama set in the Appalachian world of Pentecostal snake handlers. Amy Nicholson of Variety calls it "a hell of a picture." Don't miss this limited engagement!
- By popular demand, Midsommar arrives for a special limited engagement. Ari Aster's follow up to his award winning debut follows a couple who visit a bucolic Swedish retreat and quickly find that nothing is as it seems. Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair calls it "a shocking piece of filmmaking."
