Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Hordes turned out for the opening weekend of A Most Wanted Man, and two new critically acclaimed films join it as August continues:- Director Mike Cahill (Another Earth) returns to our screens with another piece of thoughtful, sweeping sci-fi. I Origins features Cahill's frequent collaborator Brit Marling (The East) and Michael Pitt (Bully, Last Days) and takes the "science" in science fiction seriously. Roger Moore of Movie Nation says: "In a season of the year where sci-fi is dumbed down and then dumbed some more for mass consumption, here's a piece of speculative fiction that will stick with you long after the last Transformer's battery has died."
- The latest from Richard Linklater (Before Midnight) is truly an epic feat of film craft. 12 years in the making, Boyhood offers a REAL coming of age story, following the protagonist (Ellar Coltrane) from age 5 to age 18. Garnering an unprecedented "100" rating on Metacritic, the film has been universally lauded. Manohla Dargis of the New York Times calls it Linklater's masterpiece, adding that "he both captures moments in time and relinquishes them as he moves from year to year. He isn’t fighting time but embracing it in all its glorious and agonizingly fleeting beauty."
On Thursday, we'll be hosting another special event for the outdoorsy folks among us. The 2014 Cayuga Lake SUP CUP, a weekend of stand up paddle board events and races, kicks off with a selection of films from the Reel Paddling Film Festival. The fun starts at 7:30 pm on Thursday, August 14.
Some favorites will be leaving to make room for these new films. Thursday is your last chance to see Snowpiercer and Wish I Was Here.
