| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
It wouldn't be summer at Cinemapolis without the annual release from Woody Allen. His latest gets joined by another limited engagement on Friday: - Irrational Man features Oscar Nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Her, Inherent Vice) in the traditional angst-ridden lead role of Abe, a philosophy professor stuck in an existential rut. That may sound like familiar territory for Allen, but when Abe engages in a "meaningful act" that changes his role in his little college town community, the result is what the Hollywood Reporter calls a "darkly humorous quasi-thriller." The stellar supporting cast including Emma Stone (Birdman, Magic in the Moonlight) and Parker Posey (A Mighty Wind, Personal Velocity) helps to propel a film whose "dialogue is witty...plotting zings along with forward momentum in all the right places, and...observation of elastic moral principles in flux is both mischievous and unsettling, yielding a tasty final-act Hitchcockian twist."
- In a very limited engagement, Charlize Theron (Monster) joins Chloe Grace Moretz (Clouds of Sils Maria) and Tye Sheridan (Mud) in the aptly titled murky thriller, Dark Places. Based on the novel by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl), the film follows Libby (Theron) as she returns to her childhood home to relive--and reveal--the details of the night her family was murdered. The twists and turns are made all the better by great performances from the female leads. According to Screen Daily: "slouching Theron is absolutely convincing as a self-loathing haunted soul with zero ambition. As the town’s “rich slut,” Chloe Grace Moretz gives yet another pitch-perfect performance. Both actresses elevate the material, making a somewhat far-fetched story both believable and enjoyable."
