| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans: |
| The unofficial end of summer is right around the corner, and we have FOUR new openers coming for the holiday weekend: - Director Bart Freundlich remakes a twisty French family drama with After the Wedding. Steve Pond of The Wrap calls it "a touching journey through a world where even those with the best intentions leave some wreckage behind, and where forward motion only comes with hard looks into the past."
- A hit at this year's Sundance film festival, Julius Onah's Luce stars Naomi Watts and Tim Roth as the adoptive parents of the titular high school all-star whose future is called into question when a teacher makes an alarming discovery. Jordan Ruimy of the Playlist calls it "a dangerous minefield and simply crackles with the kind of distressing pressure that is beginning to define America in every conversation we have about race, marginalization, social strata, woke politics and even marriage."
- Salvador Simó uses hand-drawn animation to document the making of a documentary in Buñuel in the Labyrinth of the Turtles. The film re-tells the efforts of surrealist master filmmaker Luis Buñuel to make his groundbreaking film "Las Hurdes: Land Without Bread." Steven Allison of the Playlist calls it "an incredibly touching – and altogether unexpected – human story."
- Finally, Australian auteur Jennifer Kent brings us her follow up to The Babadook, the gripping and brutal revenge tale, The Nightingale. Justin Chang of the LA Times calls it "a profound and difficult film, an attempt to grapple with the existence and mindless perpetuation of evil, and to suggest both the fleeting satisfaction and the eternal futility of vengeance. Nothing about it is easy, and everything it shows us matters."
WARNING: The Nightingale features potentially triggering acts of sexual violence towards women, violence towards children and violence motivated by racism.
All that PLUS special event screenings coming your way, including one on Thursday: |

Shakespeare’s enduring love story is known the world over. Since its 1965 premiere with The Royal Ballet, Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet has become a modern ballet classic. The choreography captures the emotions of the young couple as they fall in love, despite the barriers that finally bring about the story’s tragic end.
Each revival gives opportunities for new dancers to interpret the doomed lovers. The whole Company brings the colour and action of Renaissance Verona, where a busy market all too quickly bursts into sword fighting, and a family feud leads to tragedy for both the Montagues and Capulets. |
