| | SCHEDULE OF SHOWTIMES AUG 3 - AUG 9 ALL SHOWTIMES BELOW VALID BEGINNING FRI, AUG 3 |
| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| August kicks off with TWO new openers on Friday:
- Stand-up comic turned filmmaker Bo Burnham takes us back to middle school with the award-winning coming of age tale, Eighth Grade. Breakout star Elsie Fisher plays Kayla, a teenage girl traversing social media and social life among her fellow eighth graders. Manohla Dargis of the NY Times gives it the Critic's Pick seal of approval, calling the film "a simple story of an unremarkable girl, tenderly and movingly told."
- Award-winning director Kevin MacDonald (Last King of Scotland) returns to documentary with the "Certified Fresh" biopic, Whitney. A warts-and-all celebration of pop diva Whitney Houston, the film offers a chronology tracing both her great talent and her well-publicized downfall with equal compassion. Jordan Ruimy of the Playlist calls it "an absorbing and moving portrayal of an unforgettable heartrending figure." Don't miss this special limited engagement.
And the week has more to offer than JUST these new openers, including a special screening THIS Sunday! |
| Join filmmaker Todd McGrain and the Elephant Listening Project for a special screening of the feature-length documentary, Elephant Path / Njaia Njoku. Against a backdrop of luminous natural beauty, pierced by callous human violence, an American biologist, a Bayaka tracker, and a Bantu eco-guard unite around the last wild forest elephants in the Central African Republic. Post-Show Panel discussion moderated by Bill McQuay (NPR’s Radio Expeditions) with filmmaker Todd McGrain and special guests Andrea Turkalo + Katy Payne Post-Screening Reception at BAR ARGOS |
