| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| We head into August with THREE new openers arriving on Friday: - "Based on an actual lie," Lulu Wang's Sundance hit The Farewell tells the funny and bittersweet tale of a Chinese-American family struggling to hide the truth of a grandmother's illness. Jordan Ruimy of The Playlist says, "It’s Wang’s singular gift for life’s simplest moments which makes The Farewell ring so truthfully bare, funny and emotional."
- Another hit from this year's Sundance, Rick Alverson's The Mountain follows Jeff Goldblum and Tye Sheridan as a traveling lobotomist and his photographer assistant through early 50s America. Eric Kohn of Indiewire heaps praise onto Alverson's fifth feature, saying "this somber and lyrical achievement is the warmest and most inviting work from a director who traffics in an acquired taste."
- With Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love, documentarian Nick Broomfield presents a portrait of singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen told through the lens of the rocky relationship that inspired some of his greatest songs. Steve Pond of The Wrap calls it "as much poetry as documentary — it’s a gentle, rhapsodic film...and a moving portrait of a love that still resonates."
In addition to these great new titles, we have some special event screenings on the way, including one THIS Thursday: |

There are many versions of the story of Faust, who trades his soul with the Devil for youth and power, but Gounod’s opera remains one of the most constantly enthralling.
Michael Fabiano stars as Faust, with Diana Damrau as his beloved Marguerite and Erwin Schrott as the diabolical Méphistophélès. Virtuoso leading roles, a large chorus, sensational sets, ballet and an ecstatic finale make this the epitome of theatrical spectacle – the lavish scale of French grand opera is wonderfully in evidence in this production by David McVicar, set in 1870s Paris. The production is filmed from the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden.
