Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Seems like only yesterday that we were opening Blue Jasmine at Cinemapolis, but alas, another year has passed, and it's time for the annual release from Woody Allen! - Magic in the Moonlight is Allen's 44th (!) film, and this time around, he's returning to France and heading back to the 1920s. It's also a return to comedy. Colin Firth (The King's Speech) stars in this playful romance as an illusionist who also debunks mystics, myths, and the occult. When he meets up with an American clairvoyant played by Emma Stone (The Help), "personal and professional complications ensue." Rex Reed of the New York Observer says "it’s Mr. Firth’s picture, and he holds on like a puppy with a new bone. Mr. Firth has an insouciance light as a soufflé and a range of emotion from disillusioned arrogance to romantic surrender."
- Also debuting this weekend is a decidedly more modern take on the romantic comedy starring Daniel Radcliff (Kill Your Darlings) and Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks). Set amongst the urban lives of 20-somethings, What If asks age old questions about the possibility of platonic friendships between men and women. Justin Chang of Variety calls it "a smart, self-aware riff on romantic-comedy conventions while maintaining a core of earnest feeling."
