Greetings Cinemapolitans!

Another exciting week of movies gets started this weekend with a SPECIAL EVENT:
  • Eleanor Henderson, Ithaca College associate professor of writing, will be on hand for the Ithaca premiere of Ten Thousand Saints, the new film based on her acclaimed debut novel. Henderson’s 80s coming-of-age story was adapted for the screen and directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor) and features an all-star cast that includes Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), and Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke (Boyhood). Katie Walsh of IndieWire calls the film “an instant winner” that “[slaps] a smile on your face that won’t go away and you don’t know why.”

On Friday, August 14th, the 7 pm show will be followed by an exclusive talk-back with Henderson and an afterparty at Lot 10!

  • Also this weekend comes a Jerusalem tale of star-crossed lovers from Palestinian-born writer Sayed Kashua and Israeli director Eran Riklis. A Borrowed Identity tells the story of Eyad, an Arab sent to boarding school in Jerusalem, where he falls for Naomi, the Jewish girl from study hall. While there are twists involving the titular borrowed identity, the well-told simple story is buoyed by what Andy Wester of the NY Times calls "Impressive acting" and the "sure hand [of] Mr. Riklis, a film veteran."

  • Finally, our third opener for the weekend is fresh from this year's Sundance midnight movie set. Cop Car features Kevin Bacon as a small town sheriff with something to hide, as two young boys takes his cruiser out for a joy ride. The resulting game of cat and mouse plays out in a tense, minimal film from director and co-writer Jon Watts. Brian Moylan of the Guardian calls Watts "a director to watch – he has a spare, intimate style that uses awkward angles to draw out discomfort."
Also in the coming week, we wrap up the latest season of Shakespeare's Globe on Screen with with the uproariously chaotic The Comedy of Errors. Basing his plot on a farce by Plautus, Shakespeare caps the mayhem of his Roman original to build up a hectic tale of violent cross-purposes, furious slapstick and social nightmare. This final Globe On Screen installment for 2015 screens on Sunday, August 16th at 2pm and again on Wednesday, August 19th at 7 pm.
While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in to see Dark Places and The Stanford Prison Experiment soon. They both leave THIS Thursday (August 13).
 See you at the movies!
