| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
Two new planned releases are joined by a third special limited engagement as another week of movies begins on Friday: - Hosted by an animated minifigure and detailing the global appeal of a beloved toy block, A LEGO Brickumentary is as light and as fun a documentary as the title implies. The film covers not only the corporate successes (and missteps) of the Danish toy company that creates the plastic bricks, but also their cultural impacts as far-ranging as Lego conventions, the fan-made "brickfilm" scene, and the use of the toy to help children with autism make connections with others. As Eric Kohn of IndieWire puts it, this Brickumentary "never entirely loses the feeling of a commercial, but it’s hard to disagree with its message: In an age of innovation, Legos match the eagerness to build things in new ways and find likeminded inventors along the way."
- A decidedly darker tale comes in the form of The Stanford Prison Experiment. Winner of multiple awards at Sundance, the film utilizes original transcripts to re-tell the true story of the 1971 experiment organized by psychologist Philip Zimbardo where a group of students take on the roles of guards and prisoners. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle lauds the direct nature of the film: "director Kyle Patrick Alvarez and screenwriter Tim Talbott just tell the story and let the material unfold at a natural pace, because they know something that the audience soon figures out: These events are so gripping and so creepy, and ultimately so dispiriting in their implications, that no embellishment was necessary."
- Lastly comes a surprise limited engagement of the latest film from Amelie helmer, Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Based on the illustrated novel by Reif Larsen, The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet marks a return to Jeunet's trademark vivid style. The film follows the misadventures of the titular young cartographer as he travels cross-country, meeting colorful characters on his way to claim an award at the Smithsonian. It all adds up to what CineVue's Joe Walsh calls "a plush, modern fairytale with strains of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn."
