| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
The barrage of new summer indies continues this week, as July finishes up with two new openers: - Infinitely Polar Bear, the feature debut from writer-director Maya Forbes, was nominated for Grand Jury Prize at this year's Sundance. The auto-biographical tale focuses on a tough but rewarding chapter Forbes' childhood, during which she and her sister were raised by their bipolar father (Mark Ruffalo) while their mother (Zoe Saldana) went to grad school. While there are certainly lots of laughs along the way, this dramedy is filled authentic, pointed moments dealing with both mental illness and being a mixed race family in the 1970s. All this is in large part thanks to what Variety's Justin Chang calls "one of Mark Ruffalo’s richest, most appealing performances."
- Another Sundance darling arrives on Friday in the form of Sean Baker's lo-fi, microbudget smash Tangerine. Shot entirely on iPhones, the film follows Sin-Dee and Alexandra, two transgender prostitutes, as they navigate the seedy side of Hollwood. The reviews are right—from the verité aesthetic to the profanely real dialogue of its unlikely heroines, Tangerine is like nothing you've ever seen. Stephanie Zacharek of the Village Voice sums it up best: "Tangerine's a comedy, of course, laced with rambunctious, exuberantly ragged dialogue. But by the end, Baker and his actors have led us to a place beyond comedy — you may still be laughing, but your breath catches a little on the way out."

| On Sunday at 2 pm, the Family Classics Picture Show continues to re-introduce the Golden Age of Hollywood to parents and kids with a with a screening of the 1953 western, Shane. To get families excited about the magic of the movies, each of these matinees feature an introduction by actor, magician, and movie buff David Moreland and include custom enrichment guides to help continue the conversation after the credits roll. Discounted tickets for these special Sunday events are just $3 for adults, $2 for kids, or $10 for a “family pass” of up to five people. The Family Classics Picture Show at Cinemapolis is made possible by lead sponsor Wells Fargo Advisors. Additional program support comes from Mama Goose.
