Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
It's the end of an era here at the Mop. After 16 record-breaking weeks, Grand Budapest Hotel will be leaving. You have until Thursday to catch it one last time on the big screen! Wes Anderson's frenetic thrill-ride leaves some big shoes to fill.
Three new films will try to do just that this Friday: - Iconic documentarian Steve James (Hoop Dreams) turned his lens on renowned film critic Roger Ebert for the honest and heart-breaking Life Itself. Based on Ebert's memoir of the same name, the film documents the final months of his life while looking back on the phenomenal impact he had on the way we watch movies.
- The latest from writer/director Kelly Reichardt (Meek's Cut Off) has been a festival favorite for months, and now it arrives on our screens. Night Moves follows three scheming young eco-terrorists and offers up what IndieWire calls "a crackling little suspense thriller/morality play indebted to Dostoyevsky and Hitchcock." Catch this limited engagement while you can!
- Finally, a Swedish comic-book comes to life in the punk-rock period piece We Are The Best! Director Lukas Moodyson adapted his wife's graphic novel about three Stockholm girls trying to form a punk band in the face of slim odds and slimmer talent. An award winner at international festivals around the globe, it's a rock comedy that the Village Voice says "captures perfectly the aimlessness of adolescence, the waiting to become something that's so often intertwined with the desire to make something, to leave your mark on the world in some small way."
Three special events coming in the next week begin on Friday, when we'll continue our partnership with the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival for another Fantastic Film Friday. Borgman is a truly twisted entry from Dutch director Alex van Warmerdam that was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2013, but is just now making the rounds on this side of the Atlantic. IIFFF founder Hugues Barbier will introduce this special screening that begins at 9:30 on Friday.
The weekend continues with another National Theatre Live screening of A Small Family Business. The Alan Ayckbourn comedy screens one last time at 1:30 pm on Saturday, July 19th.
