| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
A new week of movies is on the way with two new films opening on Friday: - The world's most famous detective gets an intimate, character-based treatment in Mr. Holmes. This latest film from Oscar winning director Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, Kinsey) stars Ian McKellen as an aging Sherlock struggling to remember the details of the case that forced him into retirement. Based on a novel by Mitch Cullin, the beautifully shot period-piece set in post-WW II Sussex offers up more than just a detective story and, according to Variety's Scott Foundas, reveals "our need for stories themselves and, in particular, the role of fiction as an escape from the pain and loss of everyday life."
- Another lush British period piece comes in the form of the film adaption of Vera Brittain's renowned WWI memoir, Testament of Youth. Alicia Vikander (A Royal Affair, Ex Machina) shines as Brittain, a rising Oxford student who becomes a nurse at the outset of war and eventually goes on to be one of the nation's most outspoken pacifists. Helmed by BBC vet James Kent, the film eschews battlefield sequences for an intimate depiction of the unfathomable loss experienced on the home front. The result is what IndieWire's Oliver Lyttleton calls a collection of "beautifully observed moments, captured gorgeously by Kent, and excellently performed by its cast, that...add up to a sort of mosaic of grief, loss and even anger at the absolute waste of an insane, inhuman conflict, and all without showing a single bullet fired."

| On Sunday, we return to ancient Rome with the Shakespeare's Globe on Screen production of Antony & Cleopatra. Virtue and vice, transcendent love and realpolitik combine in Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breathtaking beauty and magnificence. Olivier Award-winner Eve Best’s ‘magnetically humorous’ (Evening Standard) performance captures Cleopatra’s sensuality brilliantly. The taut drama screens at Cinemapolis on Sunday July 19th at 2 pm at again on Wednesday, July 22nd at 7 pm.

| Also in the coming week, the Finger Lakes Independence Center continues their celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Their summer film series looks to explore the history, present, and future of disability rights and challenge our concepts of disability, ability, and normalcy. It concludes on Tuesday, July 21st at 7 pm with a screening of Fixed: The Science/Fiction of Human Enhancement, Regan Brashear's probing documentary about labels like "normal" and "disabled" in the face of future filled with new technology and body modification. Introduction and discussion following with Rik Daniels, a founding member of Aspire Dance Co., dedicated to inspiring change through dance.
While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in to see The Overnight and The Wolfpack soon. They both leave THIS Thursday (July 16). |
