| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
As summer chugs along, two music-centric films arrive on our screens this Friday: - With AMY, documentarian Asif Kapadia (Senna) captures the troubled and too-short life of British neo-soul singer Amy Winehouse. Using existing footage to trace Winehouse's early years as well as her meteoric rise to international stardom, the film also showcases the media circus that gobbled up her descent into the substance abuse that would eventually kill her. The result is what Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian calls "an overwhelmingly sad, intimate – and dismaying – study of a woman whose talent and charisma helped turn her into a target." Nominated for the Golden Eye at this year's Cannes film festival, AMY is sure to be on short lists in the U.S. come award season.
- Another Cannes nominee--and Sundance winner--joins us on Friday. The dramatic teen comedy DOPE follows the misadventures of Malcolm, Diggy, and Jib, three self-described geeks trying to survive high-school in Inglewood. While it features some familiar faces (like Grand Budapest Hotel's Tony Revolori), the break-out star is new-comer Shameik Moore as Malcolm, the geeky, driven everyman who leads the trio through a caper involving drug-dealers, 90s hip-hop, and, of course, some awkward romance. All this in a thoughtful coming-of-age package that Alan Scherstuhl of the Village Voice says is "a story about growing up, getting out, even as you discover that much of what you reject about the world you're raised in is already there inside you — and that you can bring all that to the next place, which will be better for it."

| Also in the coming week, the Finger Lakes Independence Center continues their celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Their summer film series looks to explore the history, present, and future of disability rights and challenge our concepts of disability, ability, and normalcy. It continues on Tuesday, July 14th at 7 pm with a screening of Lives Worth Living, Eric Neudel's historical documentary on the Disability Rights Movement. Mayor Svante Myrick will provide an introduction and a panel discussion will follow the screening.
