| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
A special Wednesday night opening gets us ready for the holiday weekend, and two more films join in on Friday: - On Wednesday, Jesse Andrews' acclaimed novel comes to the screen. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, winner of both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance, manages to put a comical spin on the subject of teens and cancer. It follows the exploits of budding filmmakers Greg and Earl as they befriend Rachel (the titular "dying girl"), and the result is what John DeFore of the Hollywood Reporter calls "A smart-ass charmer, merciless tearjerker and sincere celebration of teenage creativity."
- Another Sundance comedy—this one DECIDEDLY adult— comes on Friday. Jason Schwartzman (Grand Budapest Hotel, Darjeeling Limited) leads Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling through The Overnight, a wild and weird sex comedy that tracks an evening that begins with an innocent playdate and quickly devolves into debauchery. Katie Walsh of IndieWire calls it "Smart, playful, and hilarious... a delightful romp between the sheets."
- Finally, don't miss a limited engagement of the bubbly French romance, Gemma Bovery. Writer-Director Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel), sends up and puts a modern spin on Flaubert's classic novel, Madame Bovery, all through the eyes of Martin (Fabrice Luchini), a middle-aged baker. When the Boverys move in across the road, Martin sees literary plots unfold as their marriage stales and Gemma (Gemma Arterton) engages in affairs with men in town. Rex Reed of the Observer calls it a "sensual and gratifying movie that finds and polishes connections between literature and the screen while further catapulting the wonderful British actress Gemma Arterton several notches up the ladder toward international stardom."

| This month, we'll be hosting the Finger Lakes Independence Center as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Their summer film series looks to explore the history, present, and future of disability rights and challenge our concepts of disability, ability, and normalcy. It begins on Tuesday, July 7th at 7 pm with a screening of Loving Lampposts, Todd Drezner's moving documentary about the conflicting movements to find the cause of and treatment for autism. Drezner will skype in for a live discussion after the screening. The series will continue with two more Tuesday night screenings in July.
While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in to see The Midnight Swim soon. It leaves THIS Thursday (July 2). |
