| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| A June full of movies continues with THREE new openers arriving on Friday, each of them a NY Times Critic's Pick:
- American auteur Paul Schrader makes a triumphant return with the acclaimed First Reformed. Ethan Hawke is getting early Oscar buzz as Reverent Ernst Toller, a small-town minister struggling with loss—of family and of faith. A.O. Scott of the New York Times calls it "a portrait of a soul in torment, all the more powerful for being so rigorously conceived and meticulously executed."
- Ian McEwan adapts his own best-selling novel for the screen with On Chesil Beach. Set in 1962, eons before the sexual revolution, the film stars Saoirse Ronan and Billy Howle as a newlywed couple having difficulty consummating their marriage. A.O. Scott says it "has both a rich sense of how much more there is to life than sex, and also an acute awareness of how sex can overwhelm everything else."
- Writer/director Michael Pearce makes his feature debut with the romantic thriller, Beast. Jessie Buckley stars as Moll, a young woman on the isle of Jersey who encounters a mysterious poacher (Johnny Flynn) who might be hunting more than just animals. Jeannette Catsoulis of the NY Times calls it "a feverish fairy tale riven with dark horrors and forbidden desires."
In addition to these new films, we also have some special screening events on the way, including one TONIGHT: |

Press Play is a new joint program between the Kitchen Theatre Company and Cinemapolis that puts a currently running play in conversation with a film exploring similar themes. This 3-part series included screenings of select films paired with the Kitchen’s productions of Ironbound, Bright Half Life, and, now with the closing show of the season, Matt & Ben. Following each screening, audiences are invited to stay for a conversation led by Kitchen Theatre artists.
The series wraps up on Tuesday, June 5th at 7 pm with a special screening of the wildly funny Connie And Carla, starring Toni Collette and Nia Vardalos. Stick around after the show for a post-screening conversation with Caitlin Cassidy and Lilli Hokama, the stars of the the KTC production of Matt & Ben.
