Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Two commencements and one big community festival behind us means its officially summer in Ithaca. To celebrate, we're opening three new films AND adding an extra matinee to our schedule:
- After a well-received sneak preview, Chef comes back for a full run. Jon Favreau returns to his indie roots (Swingers, Made) for this heart-felt comedy about a culinary artist trying to piece back together his career and his family. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle says it's "the best thing [Favreau] has ever done, as writer or director or actor. It's the sort of thing of beauty that filmmakers are ultimately remembered for."
- Jim Mickle is an indie auteur on the rise. His twisty and macabre thriller, We Are What We Are, creeped out Cinemapolis audiences in November. His latest, Cold in July, makes CriticWire's best reviewed films of the year list. This gritty 80s crime drama features Michael C. Hall and Sam Shepard, but, according the Village Voice, "Don Johnson, still magnetic after all these years, steals the film as a sardonic private eye with a vintage cherry-red convertible."
- Finally, Argentine novelist and filmmaker Lucía Puenzo brings us The German Doctor. Based on her own novel, this fact-based piece of historical fiction focuses on a simple family in Patagonia that realizes they may be hosting infamous Nazi, Josef Mengele. Puenzo spins the tale into an indictment of Argentina’s sheltering of war criminals that shouldn't be missed. This subtitled treasure is here for a limited engagement, so catch it while you can.
Now that summer is here, we've decided to add a little something special to our schedule. Every Thursday, in addition our morning Cry Baby Cinema screenings, we're keeping the doors open for an extra afternoon matinee. Start the weekend a day early and cool off with a breezy afternoon movie at the Mop! (#4DayWeekend). |
