Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
We're gearing up for the July 4th holiday with two films opening this Friday, and a third with a special Wednesday premiere:
- A smash hit at Sundance, Obvious Child could be a star making turn for Saturday Night Live alumna, Jenny Slate. Guided by first-time director Gillian Robespierre, Slate plays a stand-up comedian struggling with an unexpected pregnancy. The resulting handling of a subject that has been all but taboo in Hollywood is what the Village Voice calls "perfect for those who want more honesty in fiction." Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes will host a special "PPSFL Night" during the screenings on Tuesday, July 1.
- The directorial debut from Mike Meyers (yes, that Mike Meyers) is the unexpectedly honest and sweet story of a nice guy working among an industry of creeps. With the documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, Meyers delves into the unlikely life and career of Gordon, the drug dealer turned rock manager/producer who counts among his close friends Alice Cooper, Emeril Lagasse, and the Dalai Lama (yes, that Dalai Lama).
Supermensch will be here for FIVE DAYS ONLY, so be sure to catch this wild story while you can!
- Taking its place will be an entirely different kind of wild ride. Snowpiercer barrels its way onto our screens for a special Wednesday opening. The film is the English-language debut from acclaimed Korean director Joon-ho Bong (The Host), and the Telegraph calls it "the train movie to end all train movies, a dystopic vision full of vivid characters, dark humour, awe-inspiring revelations and surreal imagery." Defying its genre roots, Snowpiercer employs a cast that includes Academy Award nominees John Hurt and Ed Harris and Academy Award winners Tilda Swinton and Octavia Spencer. It's a summer movie action flick made for the Mop!
On Friday at 5:30, the Ithaca Dawah Circle will present a special free screening of Healing Neen. A close look at the problems caused by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), the screening will be followed by a panel discussion with representatives from Ithaca Health Alliance, Women's Opportunity Center, OAR, Advocacy Center, Alcohol and Drug Council, and more.
