Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Another Fantastic Film Friday, a special two night engagement of Citizen Koch, and a National Theatre Live Encore join two new films on the schedule in the coming week:
- Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski (My Summer of Love) delves into the history of his home country with the beautifully made Ida. It follows a young nun in the 1960s as she uncovers long-hidden family secrets. NY Times critic A.O. Scott says "Its intimate drama unfolds at the crossroads where the Catholic, Jewish and Communist strains of Poland’s endlessly and bitterly contested national identity intersect." It's been showered with awards at festivals in Warsaw, London, Toronto, and Telluride. Ida should not be missed.
- Australian director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom) reunites with Guy Pearce in the gritty outback tale, The Rover. Since its debut at Cannes just weeks ago, critics are a-buzz about Pearce's performance and the relentless plot. The LA Times' Kenneth Turan calls it "a film shot in 100-degree-plus heat that chills the blood as well as the soul." Sounds like the perfect remedy for summer heat in Ithaca!
On Friday, the Fantastic Film Friday series continues with a documentary from acclaimed director Lance Bangs. Breadcrumb Trail follows the brief history of Louisville, Kentucky band Slint with a focus on their seminal final album, Spiderland.
Then on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Sundance hit Citizen Koch arrives for a special two-night only engagement. It screens both nights at 7 pm only, so don't miss your chance to see it!
