| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| Summer has (unofficially) arrived in Ithaca. Come cool off with some great movies. We have THREE new openers arriving on Friday:
- A disappearing slice of American life gets illuminated in writer/director Chloé Zhao's award-winning second feature, The Rider. Utilizing a cast of non-actors to tell a fictionalized version of their real life struggles, the film is what Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter calls "a rare gem, a small, acutely observed portrait of a few lives on what used to be the frontier but is now a desolate backwater, the windswept badlands around Pine Ridge, South Dakota."
- John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) takes us back to the punk revolution, via spaceship, in the "gloriously bananas" How To Talk to Girls at Parties. Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning are among a stellar ensemble cast that tell the story of two star-crossed lovers on a 48 hour tour through late 70s London. Nikola Grozdanovic of The Playlist calls it an "outer space oddity ...destined for the cult-classic section of some future camp horror and sci-fi B-movie aisle."
- Hungarian writer/director Ferenc Török revisits post-war Europe in the stark and tense 1945. Just months after V-E Day, a pair of Orthodox Jews, father and son, get off a train in a small Hungarian town with a mysterious trunk and a load of secrets. Drama unfolds as the residents and the visitors deal with both the aftermath of war and the lingering cultural tensions that led up to it. Kenneth Turan of the LA Times calls it "potent messenger about a time that is gone but whose issues and difficulties are not even close to being past. "
In addition to these new films, we also have some special screening events on the way, including one THIS Thursday: |

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Family & Children’s Services of Ithaca, with support from the Pamela & Robert Swieringa Education Center, present a one-time screening of The Mask You Live In. Written, produced and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film follows a diverse group of boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion, including IHS Principal Jason Trumble, Mayor of the City of Ithaca Svante Myrick, Minister of the First Congregational Church David Kaden, Violence Prevention Specialist Davi Mozie, and director of My Brother's Keeper Travis Brooks.

Press Play is a new joint program between the Kitchen Theatre Company and Cinemapolis that puts a currently running play in conversation with a film exploring similar themes. This 3-part series included screenings of select films paired with the Kitchen’s productions of Ironbound, Bright Half Life, and, now with the closing show of the season, Matt & Ben. Following each screening, audiences are invited to stay for a conversation led by Kitchen Theatre artists.
The series wraps up on Tuesday, June 5th at 7 pm with a special screening of the wildly funny Connie And Carla, starring Toni Collette and Nia Vardalos. Stick around after the show for a post-screening conversation with Caitlin Cassidy and Lilli Hokama, the stars of the the KTC production of Matt & Ben.
