| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
A packed month of May continues with another THREE new films opening on Friday:
- Kristen Wiig (Skeleton Twins) returns to indie comedy territory with Welcome To Me. Wiig stars as Alice Klieg, an Oprah-addicted lottery winner with borderline personality disorder who funnels her new found fortune into a TV show of her own. The cast includes Jennifer Jason Lee, Tim Robbins, and Joan Cusak, but, like the broadcast at heart of the film, the show is all Wiig's. Christopher Gray of Slant Magazine says that she "recalls some of her more famous Saturday Night Live characters in being flat of affect yet frayed of nerve, and [it] plays like a weirdly potent expansion of one of those recurring sketches. Wiig affords Alice with an occasionally startling range of false confidence and emotional vulnerability."
- Wim Wenders (Pina, Buena Vista Social Club) discovered the haunting black and white artworks of celebrated Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado more than 25 years ago. The Salt of the Earth is a tribute to the man and his decades-long journey around globe to document the human condition. Co-directed by Salgado's son Juliano, Rodrigo Perez of the Playlist calls it "a mesmeric and unforgettable look at the world and its sufferings through the eyes of a remarkably insightful and honorable artist." Don't miss the opportunity to see these stunning images on the big screen.
- Rounding out the trio of openers is a dark discovery from this year's Tribeca Film Festival. Maggie answers the question, "What if Little Miss Sunshine and the Terminator starred in a tear-jerker family medical drama wrapped in a zombie-genre package?" Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin stars as the titular infected teen with a doting father (former California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger) who'll do anything to keep her safe. This feature debut from director Henry Hobson puts a fresh spin on the genre and on the expectations of its male lead. According to Eric Kohn of IndieWire Maggie "subtly examines whether people accustomed to a precise way of life can deal with cataclysmic change; by extension, it implies similar questions about Schwarzenegger's career as he heads toward his seventies, and makes a solid case that more new directions await." This is a limited engagement, so catch this unlikely performance before it's gone.

| This weekend, we also welcome the latest installment from Shakespeare's Globe on Screen.
Another production from the Globe’s “Arms and the Man” season, their sell-out production of Julius Caesar employed authentic Renaissance costumes and staging, and showcased what the Daily Telegraph called “a rapport between the performers and the audience that feels genuinely magical.”
