| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| May is upon us with another month chock-full of new movies. Three join our slate on Friday: - Everyone's favorite sex therapist is IN for the new documentary, Ask Dr. Ruth. Tracking the life story and cultural impact of Dr. Ruth Westheimer, filmmaker Ryan White lets the subject do most of the talking for herself. Josh Modell of the AV Club says, "As a documentary, Ask Dr. Ruth has it kind of easy: It’s got an enchanting subject eager to tell a fascinating story."
- Initially banned in its home country of Kenya and a hit at last year's Cannes Film Festival, Rafiki tells the story of Kena and Ziki, two Kenyan girls searching for a love that their government and community forbids. Odie Henderson of RogerEbert.com calls it "A lyrical ode to finding a kindred spirit amidst an uncaring majority."
- Budding American auteur David Robert Mitchell follows up It Follows with the goofily surreal neo-noir, Under the Silver Lake. Andrew Garfield stars as Sam, a Hollywood schlub searching for a missing girl and possibly discovering a secret history of Los Angeles along the way. Joshua Rothkopf of Time Out says "It's the kind of raggedy-ass thriller that only happens when a young filmmaker, emboldened by success, throws away discipline, hoping to summon the full, meandering spell of a paranoid nightmare."
On top of the new titles, we have a bevy of special event screenings over the next week, including one TONIGHT: |

PRESS PLAY is back for its second season! This collaboration between the Kitchen Theatre Company and Cinemapolis puts a currently running play in conversation with a film that explores similar themes.
The 2nd season continues on Tuesday, April 30th with the pairing of GROUNDED with the 1980 Academy Award nominated comedy, Private Benjamin. Both the play and the film, in their own ways, address the roles of women in today’s military. M. Bevin O’Gara, Producing Artistic Director of the Kitchen Theatre, will be leading the post-screening conversation. |
| | Cinemapolis will once again be celebrating juris prudence this May 1st. To commemorate Law Day 2019, we’re hosting a pair of special screenings that showcase lawyering at its best. The program kicks off on Wednesday, May 1st at 5:00 pm with the Academy Award nominated 1960 classic, Inherit the Wind. Then, at 8:00 pm, Reese Witherspoon stars in Legally Blonde, the 2001 law school comedy that spawned a Broadway musical and movie sequels.

| | Who Will Write Our History tells the story of Emanuel Ringelblum and the Oyneg Shabes Archive, the secret archive he created and led in the Warsaw Ghetto. With 30,000 pages of writing, photographs, posters, and more, the Oyneg Shabes Archive is the most important cache of in-the-moment, eyewitness accounts from the Holocaust. It documents not only how the Jews of the ghetto died, but how they lived. The film is based on the book of the same name by historian Samuel Kassow.
This is a special one-time screening to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day. |
| | While you’re planning your next week at the movies, get in soon to catch The Brink. It has its last screenings THIS Thursday, May 2nd!
