| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
Summer has arrived in Ithaca, and that means the Ithaca Festival is close behind. In addition to some fun fest-ivities, we have two new openers coming this weekend:
- The continuing misadventures of Allan Karlsson are chronicled in the daffy Swedish hit The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. Adapted from the international best-seller of the same name by writer/director Felix Herngren, this century spanning romp stars beloved Swedish actor Robert Gustafsson in the title role. The film won the audience choice award at last year's Chicago International Film Festival, and John Anderson of the Wall Street Journal calls it "A little bit “Gump,” a little bit “Zelig."
- The late master documentarian Albert Maysles returns to our screens with Iris, a portrait of fashion icon Iris Apfel. Like the best of his work with his brother David, Maysles lets his personality and persona be a part of the story-telling in this profile of a fellow eccentric genius that NY Times reviewer Manohla Dargis calls "a delightful eye-opener about life, love, statement eyeglasses, bracelets the size of tricycle tires and the art of making the grandest of entrances."

Ithaca Festival 2015 takes up residence at the theater on Sunday. For the final day of this year's fest, we'll once again host a Local Filmmakers' Showcase from 2 to 6 pm, and then at 7 pm, we'll be screening the entries in this year's 72 Hour Filmmaking Competition. If you're interested in taking part in the competition, find out more details at IthacaFestival.org! |

And then make plans for next week...on Thursday, June 4th, Award-winning local film company PhotoSynthesis Productions will hold a special Final Pre-Release Screening of its film CIVIL WARRIORS at 7 PM. Through a series of spoken-word performances, the film tells the true story of 26 African-American men from Tompkins County who enlisted in the US Colored Troops and fought in the Civil War. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Eric Acree of Cornell University’s Africana Center, and featuring co-directors/co-producers Deborah C. Hoard and Che Broadnax, and members of the cast and crew. Tickets for this one night only showing are on sale now!
While you plan your next week at the movies, be sure to catch Good Kill and Felix and Meira soon, they both leave this Thursday (May 28).
