Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
As carloads of students head out of town, take a break from the traffic and stop by Cinemapolis for THREE new movies that open on Friday:- After months of seeing the preview, you can finally catch Belle on our screens. Inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, critic Joe Williams calls it "a ringing proclamation of human dignity."
- Everyone is talking about Fed Up, the latest from environmental documentarian Stephanie Soechtig. An all-out assault on the American food industry, the film sheds light on the dangerous ubiquity of sugar in our diet. Don't miss this limited engagement!
- And finally comes the all-star cast of The Immigrant. Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Renner take the leads in this gorgeous period piece from James Gray (Little Odessa, Two Lovers). A hit at last year's Cannes, A.O. Scott says it "hums with pure, deep and complicated emotion."
Also in the coming week, the History Center of Tompkins County wraps up the MOOG Monday series. To celebrate the opening of the new exhibit Switched-On: the Birth of the MOOG Synthesizer, each Monday in May features a screening of a synth-scored film. On May 26, you'll get a chance to see Performance, the twisted 1970 film that made Mick Jagger learn to play a MOOG for one of his dual roles. It will be introduced by Trevor Pinch, author of Analog Days, and the MOOG expert who trained Jagger for the film.
To make room for these new films, we must bid adieu to three others. Jodorowsky's Dune, Joe, and Locke all leave after Thursday. Catch them while you can!
PLUS, by popular demand, you still have ONE MORE WEEK to see Finding Vivian Maier - it plays once each day. |
