| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
We head into a holiday weekend with three highly anticipated openers arriving on Friday:
- Carey Mulligan (Inside Llewyn Davis, Skylight) stars is the swirling Thomas Hardy adaptation, Far From the Madding Crowd. She shines as Bathsheba Everdene, a no-nonsense Victorian-era woman whose unexpected inheritance finds her in the midst of a love quadrangle. Deftly directed by Academy Award nominee, Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt), it's a period piece that Roger Moore of Tribune News Service calls "a story that feels more lived-in, brutish and realistic."
- Writer-Director Andrew Niccol reunites with his Gattaca star, Ethan Hawk, in the timely and pointed drama Good Kill. Hawke plays Major Thomas Egan, an ex-fighter pilot who now operates drones in the Middle East from a cubicle in Nevada. Tracking Egan's descent into an ethical and psychological quagmire of killing by remote control, Guy Lodge of Variety calls Good Kill a "heady conversation piece...at once forward-thinking and exhilaratingly of the moment." Don't miss this limited engagement!
- Last on our list is the fantastic rock-doc, Lambert & Stamp. It reveals the untold story of the unlikely duo of Christopher Stamp and Kit Lambert, a pair of aspiring film-makers that took a left turn and wound up guiding The Who into the pantheon of British Invasion rock gods. Filled with remarkable concert footage and surprising interviews from those who were there, Lambert & Stamp provides what David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter calls "a vigorous testament to the rewards of creative collaboration, shining a spotlight on two highly unorthodox, self-invented rock entrepreneurs."

| Don't forget that the National Theatre Live presentation of Tom Stoppard's highly-anticipated new play The Hard Problem screens again on Saturday, May 23rd at 1:30 pm.
And then make plans for next week...on Tuesday, May 26th, we'll welcome Professor and historian Dr. Joan Jacobs Brumberg back to the theater for a special one-time screening of the brilliant new documentary She's Beautiful When She's Angry. Shining a light on the women's liberation movement of the 60s and 70s, the Village Voice calls Mary Dore's acclaimed film "One of the year's best ...an urgent, illuminating dive into the headwaters of second-wave feminism, the movement that — no matter what its detractors insist — has given us the world in which we live." Brumberg will intro the film and lead a talk-back after the screening. Tickets are available now for this one-night showing on Tuesday, May 26th at 7 pm. |
