| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| A busy May continues as we add FOUR new films to our slate: - Dame Judy Dench stars in the true Cold War story, Red Joan. Tiffany Tchobanian of Film Threat calls it "an intriguing piece of hidden history, showcasing women’s strengths and the overlooked roles they played during the world’s most turbulent times of war."
- Award-winning filmmaker (and Colgate professor) Penny Lane takes us to the temple with the hilarious and insightful new doc, Hail Satan? IndieWire's David Ehrlich says "Lane has an unmatched ability to strike the right balance between anger and absurdism, and frames the Temple in a revelatory moral light."
- The creative minds behind Downton Abbey hit the big screen with The Chaperone. Rex Reed of the Observer calls it "a fascinating, exquisitely made film about the early life of sultry silent-screen star Louise Brooks, who traveled from Wichita, Kan., in 1922 to New York City with a proper chaperone named Norma Carlisle."
- The award-winning Swedish filmmaking duo Pella Kagerman & Hugo Lilja chart a course for deep space in Aniara. Dennis Harvey of Variety says, "this tale of a spaceship stuck wandering the cosmos after being forced off course is both impressive in its scope and intimate in its portrait of human nature under long-term duress."
On top of the new titles, we have a bevy of special event screenings coming up, including one TONIGHT: |
| | Cinemapolis is proud to be among the 36 independent cinemas selected to be part of this year's Science on Screen® program. Science on Screen events match classic, cult, science fiction, and nonfiction films with lively presentations by experts on specific scientific, technological, or medical issues raised by each film.
Our first season of events wraps up with BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY! The screening will be followed by a panel discussion titled “Elevating Voices and Bridging Worlds for Women in STEM.” It will feature four women sharing their stories, work, and thoughts about creating supportive spaces, navigating challenges, and charting the course for girls and women in STEM fields.
Panelists for the evening include Carlan Gray, Michelle Kortenaar, Jai Sweet, and Jennifer Wilkie.
Science on Screen® is an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre. With major support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Rhythm & Reels is a series of music-themed films & parties brought to you by DJ Tuggle, Lara Green and Cinemapolis. Whether new releases, classics, or untold stories… the series will continue to make the connections between music and film. Each film screening will be followed by an afterparty for all attendees with music, a pop-up bar, and an opportunity to hang, dance, and experience one of Ithaca’s favorite places as an unexpected dose of nightlife.
Join us this month in conjunction with the Ithaca Reggae Fest for Jimmy Cliff’s 1972 classic The Harder They Come in its fully restored and remastered 40th Anniversary edition. DJ Tuggle and Lara Green will transform the lobby into a pre-show lounge starting at 8 pm, so grab a drink and hang out before the movie, then stick around for the after party!
Ithaca Reggae Fest will be in the house with Ana’s Curry Popcorn, info on its mission of raising awareness about the environmental issues facing Cayuga Lake, and chances to win tickets to the festival.
