Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
I know it's a busy time of year here in Ithaca, so I'm giving everyone another chance to catch the great movies we have playing. All five films are held over, PLUS we're adding a brand new film on Friday:- John Turturro wrote, directed, and stars as the titular Casanova in Fading Gigolo, a film that eschews the traps of the typical "sex comedy" and, as Peter DeBruge of Variety puts it, "unfolds as a series of tender surprises, each one making the crazy concept seem that much more human."
It also features a rare appearance in front of the camera by Woody Allen as Turturro's even unlikelier pimp.
Also this week, the History Center of Tompkins County continues the MOOG Monday series. To celebrate the opening of the new exhibit Switched-On: the Birth of the MOOG Synthesizer, each Monday in May will feature a screening of a synth-scored film. On May 19, you won't want to miss the chance to see a newly digitized version of the 1951 classic The Day the Earth Stood Still. It will be accompanied by a special theremin demonstration by James Spitznagel.
