| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| May is just around the corner, and we have TWO new openers to finish out the month:
- Winner of best actor and best screenplay awards at Cannes, Scottish auteur Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here is a gritty thriller starring Joaquin Phoenix as an ex-FBI agent turned contract killer. Based on the book by Jonathan Ames, it's a brooding and relentless film that Kate Muir of The Times calls "the Taxi Driver for a new century."
- British director Andrew Haigh (45 Years) comes across the pond for his first American feature, the award winning Lean on Pete. Based on the novel by Willy Vlautin, the film follows Charley, a lost, impoverished teen, as he discovers friendship along an ill-advised road trip with the titular racehorse. David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter calls it "a compassionately observed story told with unimpeachable naturalism and without a grain of sentimentality, propelled by a remarkable performance from Charlie Plummer that's both internalized and emotionally raw."
In addition to these new titles, we have several special events on the way, including one TONIGHT: |
| Tuesday, April 24 at 7 pm FREE ADMISSION
Finger Lakes Independence Center is kicking off their 30th anniversary celebration with the Ithaca Premiere of the groundbreaking new comedy, Keep the Change. A romantic comedy casting actors with autism to play characters with autism, the film offers a refreshingly honest portrait of a community seldom depicted on the big screen. Thoroughly charming and quite funny, the film’s warmth and candor brings growth and transformation to the characters, and ultimately, to us.
A panel discussion and Skype Q & A w/ director Rachel Israel will follow this FREE screening.

| Thursday, April 26 at 7:00 pm FREE ADMISSION
To mark the 50th Anniversary of the Global Uprising of 1968, Ithaca College’s Sociology Department is sponsoring this screening of the Classic Film Reel Documentary about the 1968 Occupation of Columbia University. The event is co-sponsored by The Ithaca College Departments of Politics, History, and Journalism, and the Park Center for Independent Media.
The post-show discussion will feature commentary by Russell Rickford and Zillah Eisenstein on the significance of the Columbia occupation to contemporary movements like Women’s Strike and Black Lives Matter.

The Ithaca Fantastik gang wraps up their April slate of Friday night one-shots with a trippy hit from last year's festival - The Endless. Screen Daily calls it "a demanding, rewarding picture with moments of unusual terror and awe, offering a science fiction/horror scenario on a literally cosmic scale which boils down to a study of a complicated sibling relationship."

| LAW DAY 2018 CELEBRATION Tuesday, May 1
Cinemapolis will be celebrating juris prudence this May 1st. To commemorate Law Day 2018, we’re hosting a pair of special screenings that showcase lawyering at its best. The program kicks off at 4:30 pm with the academy award winning 1962 classic, To Kill A Mockingbird. Then, at 7:30 pm, Chadwick Boseman stars in Marshall, the 2017 portrait of Thurgood Marshall, the crusading lawyer who would become the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. Law Day at Cinemapolis is made possible by sponsorship support from Cornell Law School and the Tompkins County Bar Association.
