| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| The April shower of new releases continues, with THREE new women-directed titles opening on Friday: - French auteur Clair Denis (Let the Sunshine In) returns to our screens with the space thriller, High Life. Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche star as two of a crew of inmates that venture into a deep space experiment to avoid a life sentence on Earth. Andrew Lapin of NPR calls it "strange and wondrous, less a traditional sci-fi film than it is a seductive journey into the long, black night of death."
- Documentarian Alison Klayman is a fly on the wall in the life of Stephen K. Bannon in The Brink. Klayman picks up with the former White House chief strategist as he travels the globe consulting with far-right parties in an effort to spread his unique brand of extreme nationalism. A.O. Scott of the NY Times names it a Critic's Pick, calling it a "fast-moving, tightly packed, at times unnervingly entertaining documentary."
- Actor and writer Laura Steinel makes her directorial debut with the coming-of-age(s) comedy, Family. Taylor Schilling stars as Kate, the frazzled workaholic aunt left to care for Maddie, her awkward pre-teen niece. Katie Walsh of the LA Times calls it a "charming, shaggy story of embracing oneself to authentically connect with others."
On top of the new titles, we have a bevy of special event screenings, beginning with a LIVE theatre event on Thursday: |

I’m Not Running is an explosive new play from David Hare. Pauline Gibson has spent her life as a doctor, the inspiring leader of a local health campaign. When she crosses paths with her old boyfriend, a stalwart loyalist in Labour Party politics, she’s faced with an agonising decision. What’s involved in sacrificing your private life and your piece of mind for something more than a single issue? Does she dare? Hare was recently described by The Washington Post as ‘the premiere political dramatist writing in English’. His other work includes Pravda and Skylight, broadcast by National Theatre Live in 2014.

Our friends from Ithaca Fantastik are back with another installment of their Fantastik Friday series.
This week marks the return of Starfish, an award winner at last year's festival. Written and directed by A.T. White, it stars Virginia Gardner as a grieving survivor of an apocalypse who uses mix-tapes to possibly save the world.
The Daily Dot calls it "a somber piece of Lovecraftian horror that examines grief, nostalgia, and our great inability to let ourselves be."
