| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
It seems the season of festivals is winding down here at the Mop, but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of special events on the way in the coming week, including a special free LIVESTREAM screening of the Cornell Charter Day event: Cornell and the Joy of Discovery: Any Person, Any Planet, featuring Bill Nye and Steve Squyres. The kick-off presentation takes place on Friday, April 24th at 6 pm. Bailey Hall sold out almost immediately, so we're acting as one of two "overflow" sites. As of this writing, FREE tickets are still available at the box office - limit 4 per patron.
We also have one new movie opening this weekend: - The documentarians behind Food, Inc are back, and this time they're taking on the "experts" and pundits-for-hire that feed the propaganda machines denying science in today's most controversial debates. Based on the book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway, Merchants of Doubt looks behind the curtain to reveal the complex machinery that creates public opinion in contemporary, media-saturated society. Kenneth Turan of the L.A. Times calls it an "enthralling film....as fascinating as it is horrifying."

| Special one-night screenings abound in the coming week. On Tuesday, April 28 at 7 pm, we welcome filmmaker Nelson Campbell and author (and Cornell professor emeritus) T. Colin Campbell for a special SNEAK PREVIEW of the new documentary PlantPure Nation. The film tells the story of how T. Colin Campbell inspired Kentucky State Representative Tom Riner to propose a pilot program documenting the health benefits of a plant-based diet. Their partnership inadvertently set in motion a series of events that exposed powerful forces opposed to the diet. All tickets are $10 for this special one-night-only event. |
| Looking ahead to next Thursday, National Theatre Live returns to our screens with a new take on an Arthur Miller classic. A View From The Bridge was the top theater pick of 2014 for The Evening Standard, Guardian and Independent, and now you can see it on the big screen. Featuring a stellar cast led by Mark Strong (The Imitation Game; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) and direction by visionary Ivo van Hove, this production of Miller’s classic confrontation of the American dream has been called “magnetic, electrifying, and astonishingly bold.” Captured live on March 26th, A View from The Bridge comes to Cinemapolis at 6:30 pm on Thursday, April 30th and again at 1:30 pm on Saturday, May 2nd. |
