| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| It may not feel like spring yet, but there's plenty of ways to warm up with a good movie, including TWO new openers arriving on our screens this Friday:
- Italian director Paolo Virzi (Like Crazy) makes his English language debut with The Leisure Seeker, a touching comedy starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland. The two play Ella and John, an aging couple who escape their respective ailments for one last road trip in the RV that shares the film's title. As Robbie Collin of the Telegraph says, "The canon of Alzheimer’s films doesn’t lack for performances piled up with compassion and fine-grained observation...but as their faded Winnebago wends its way to the coast, Ella and John show there’s room for two more."
- Also arriving for a special limited engagement is Ismael's Ghosts, the latest from acclaimed French auteur Arnaud Desplechin (My Golden Days). Focused on the bizarre love triangle between a filmmaker (Mathieu Amalric), his lover (Charlotte Gainsbourg), and his presumed dead wife (Marion Cotillard), the film is a NY Times Critic's Pick, with Glenn Kenny calling it "an unforgettable experience."
In addition to these new titles, we have several special events on the way, including one THIS Wednesday: |
|
The Ithaca Shakespeare Company continues their “Shakespeare The Rest Of The Year” series on Wednesday, April 18th with the 1995 production of Othello, featuring Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh. The series features classic presentations of Shakespeare plays, alongside adaptations based on a Shakespeare work. Many of these special screenings will include presentations from film and theatre experts to help put the Bard’s work in a contemporary context.

Caesar returns in triumph to Rome and the people pour out of their homes to celebrate. Alarmed by the autocrat’s popularity, the educated élite conspire to bring him down. After his assassination, civil war erupts on the streets of the capital. Nicholas Hytner’s production will thrust the audience into the street party that greets Caesar’s return, the congress that witnesses his murder, the rally that assembles for his funeral and the chaos that explodes in its wake.
Please note that Julius Caesar will contain strobe lighting.

The Ithaca Fantastik gang is back for another round of freaky Friday night one-shot screenings. Their April slate kicks off with a grungy hit from last year's festival - Lowlife. This one sentence synopsis says it all: "The sordid lives of an addict, an ex-con, and a luchador collide when an organ harvesting caper goes very, very wrong."
