| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| The April shower of new releases continues, with THREE new titles opening on Friday, ALL of them NY Time's Critic's Picks! - The Queen of Soul lights up the screen in the remarkable unearthed footage of Amazing Grace. Sydney Pollack shot this two-day concert recording of Aretha Franklin's best selling album in 1972. Wesley Morris of the NY Times sums it up: "You get both the most lovely gaze a professional camera’s ever laid upon Aretha Franklin and some of the mightiest singing she’s ever laid on you. The woman practically eulogizes herself. Don’t bother with tissues. Bring a towel."
- Elisabeth Moss shines in Alex Ross Perry's ode to the Riot Grrrl 90s, Her Smell. It follows the downward spiral (and possibly redemption?) of Moss's Becky Something, the self-destructive driving force behind the film's fictional grunge band, Something She. A.O. Scott of the NY Times loves it, saying, "In rock ’n’ roll mythology, the road to transcendence often passes through the gutter, and “Her Smell” sets out a beggar’s banquet of abjection."
- British auteur Mike Leigh returns to our screens with the historical epic Peterloo. It reenacts the events leading up to the Peterloo Massacre, a horrifying act of political violence from 1819, when British forces attacked a peaceful pro-democracy rally in Manchester. A.O. Scott of the NY Times says the film, "about a notorious episode of political violence, is for most of its running time a riot of verbal eloquence."
