Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
We'll also be opening THREE new films: - First up is the latest from indie auteur Noah Baumbach (Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha). More than just a film about filmmakers, While We're Young features Baumbach regular Ben Stiller as a documentarian in New York who befriends a younger creative type and turns his life and marriage upside down. The stellar cast includes Naomi Watts, Amanda Seyfried, and Adam Driver, with some hilarious supporting turns from the likes of Charles Grodin and former Beastie Boy Adam Horowitz. Catherine Shoard of the Guardian calls it "An almost perfect 90-minute hit of confident and inspired comedic commentary."
- Next comes a quirky new film from the multi-hyphenate Zellner Brothers (acting/writing/directing). A hit at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter finally makes it to our screens. Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi (Babel) stars as the titular treasure hunter, a lost soul who believes a found VHS copy of the film Fargo is a real treasure map to piles of cash hidden in the frozen tundra of the Dakotas. Eric Kohn of IndieWire says, "Striking a complex tone of tragedy and uplift at the same time, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter both celebrates the escapist power of personal fantasies and bears witness to their dangerous extremes. It's the rare case of a story that's inspirational and devastating at once."
- And finally, True Story, the feature debut from writer/director Rupert Goold, lives up to its pulpy title by telling the tale of the odd, real-life jailhouse friendship formed between journalist Mike Finkel and murderer Christian Longo. An opener at this year's Sundance, True Story takes a dash of Hollywood star power (Jonah Hill and James Franco play the writer and the killer, respectively), and tones it down into a small two-hander of a film. Katie Walsh of IndieWire says, "The film is exceptionally well-made, shot in a chilly style that utilizes intriguing close ups between the two men, evoking the coldness both of a winter in the Pacific Northwest and of a truly psychopathic crime. There is nothing warm about the style, yet it allows for moments of simmering tension, broken by a few emotional explosions that shatter its well-composed surface."
Also coming this weekend is another installment of Fantastic Film Friday. This time around, Hugues from the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival has snatched up a favorite from last year's SXSW fest - Faults. This first feature from Riley Stearns tells an odd, eerie, and twisty tale of cults and deprogramming. It features an improbable mix of psychological drama, horror, and comedy, and it's here for ONE NIGHT ONLY - Friday, April 17th at 9:30. Don't Miss it!.
Then on Sunday afternoon, the Family Classics Picture Show returns with a bit of classic ANARCHY. The series re-introduces the Golden Age of Hollywood to parents and kids with a year-long series of 10 fun and affordable Sunday matinees. The program continues on Sunday, April 19th at 2pm with a screening of Duck Soup. Our host with the most, David Moreland will be on hand once again to get parents and kids excited about the magic of the movies. The family-friendly prices don't hurt either!
Don't forget that all the special events makes for a tricky schedule so READ THESE SHOWTIMES CAREFULLY...and catch Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, What We Do In The Shadows, and Wild Tales before they leave on Thursday... |
