| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| April brings a shower of new releases, with THREE new titles opening on Friday: - Emilio Estevez writes, directs, and stars in The Public. Set during a deadly cold snap in Cincinnati, the film shines at light on issues of homelessness and the vital services beyond books provided by public libraries. Jared Mobarak of The Film Stage praises Estevez's direction, saying that he "never forgets the humanity he’s striving to spotlight."
- A hit at last year's Cannes Film Festival, Benedikt Erlingsson wrote and directed Woman at War. It follows the titular woman, Halla, as she embarks on a campaign to stop the construction of new aluminum smelter outside Reykjavik. The film is a NY Times Critic's Pick, with Jeannette Catsoulis saying, "Approaching weighty themes with a very light touch, [it] is an environmental drama wrapped in whimsical comedy and tied with a bow of midlife soul-searching."
- Canadian auteur Kim Nguyen comes stateside for his latest, the tech thriller The Hummingbird Project. Jesse Eisenberg, Alexander Skarsgård, and Salma Hayek star in this tale of two brothers looking to game the stock market by installing a secret fiber-optic line from New York to Kansas. Alex Saveliev of Film Threat calls it "a sad and visceral indictment of our society under the guise of a thriller."
Catch these new titles and plan ahead for a special event on the way after the weekend: |

The Cornell community will mark the 50th anniversary of the occupation of Willard Straight Hall with a film screening of Agents of Change.
This film captures the well-publicized events at San Francisco State College in 1968 and the occupation of the student union at Cornell in 1969. The struggle for a more relevant and meaningful education, including demands for black and ethnic studies programs, became a clarion call across the country in the late 1960s. Through the stories of these young men and women who were at the forefront of these efforts, Agents of Change examines the untold story of the racial conditions on college campuses and in the country that led to these protests.
Filmmakers Frank Dawson ’72, who participated in the occupation of Willard Straight Hall, and Abby Ginzberg ’71 will be in attendance for a Q&A after the screening.
This event is a partnership between Cornell University, Cinemapolis and The History Center in Tompkins County. |
| | While you’re planning your next week at the movies, get in soon to catch Gloria Bell and Transit. They both have their last screenings THIS Thursday, April 11th!
