Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
An annual tradition gets underway this week and takes over the theater this weekend—the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF) returns! From April 9 through April 12, FLEFF will have more than 40 events at Cinemapolis, so read this week's schedule of showtimes carefully!
Two new films open with special weekend showtimes: - First up is the latest from director Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn). Helen Mirren stars as Maria Altmann in Woman in Gold, the true-life story of a Jewish widow's attempt to get back a family heirloom (and famous work of art) stolen by Nazis in war-torn Austria. Part period piece, part courtroom drama, the cast includes Daniel Brühl (A Most Wanted Man, Inglorious Basterds), Charles Dance (Imitation Game) and Ryan Reynolds (The Nines). Critic Mark Wilshin calls it "an unexpectedly moving portrait of restitution, and it’s this battle against both humiliation and the expropriation of the past that makes Woman In Gold a valuable work of art."
- Next comes a fascinating new film from Ethan Hawke. A chance encounter at a dinner party inspired Hawke to direct this, his first documentary, and chronicle the life of pianist and teacher, Seymour Bernstein. Seymour: An Introduction is a love letter to both its gentle subject and to idea of creating one's own path through the artistic process. As Eric Kohn of IndieWire says, "Hawke makes a persuasive case for Bernstein's guru-like outlook on the value of finding personal gratification in art above all else."
Also in the coming week, a special ONE NIGHT ONLY set of screenings of the profound new documentary, The Hunting Ground. Showing only at 4:30, 7:00 and 9:20 on Wednesday, April 15th, the film from Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering (The Invisible War) provides an expose of rape crimes on U.S. college campuses, their institutional cover-ups, and the devastating toll they take on students and their families. The 7 pm show will be followed by a special talk back with reps from The Advocacy Center.
Don't forget that all the special events makes for a tricky schedule so READ THESE SHOWTIMES CAREFULLY...and catch '71 before it leaves on Thursday...
See you at the movies! |
