| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| Brace yourselves for another busy weekend - we have THREE new films opening on Friday: - As we approach the 50th anniversary of the moon shot, Apollo 11 launches onto screen. Director Todd Douglas Miller sifted through thousands of hours of archival footage and restored the pivotal moments from one of mankind's greatest feats of exploration. Adrian Horton of the Guardian calls it "a stunning project of historical preservation – no narration, no cutaway interviews, no recreations, just original material synced with some music and the occasional diagram."
- An Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, Everybody Knows is the latest from Iranian master Asghar Farhadi (The Salesman, A Separation). Featuring a stellar cast that includes Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, it follows Cruz's Laura as she returns home to a small Spanish village and discovers old secrets waiting for her. Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian says "Farhadi’s storytelling has overpowering force."
- Birds of Passage returns to our screens after opening last year's Ithaca Fantastik Fest. Here for a limited engagement, this latest from Oscar nominees Cristina Gallego & Ciro Guerra (Embrace of the Serpent) tracks the devastating effects of the early Colombian drug trade on an indigenous family. Wendy Ide of Screen Daily calls it "an engrossing narco-thriller which deftly balances the storytelling tradition of the Wayuu with the genre conventions of the crime movie and the western."
On top of these new titles, there are special events on the way this weekend, as well: |
| | Saturday, March 9 at 2 pm
featuring Q & A w/ filmmakers Jason Corwin and Tami Watt Denying Access: NoDAPL to NoNAPL is a gripping and emotionally charged documentary chronicling the Water Protectors at Standing Rock and Seneca Territory working to oppose the Dakota Access and Northern Access Pipelines.
This Indigenous-led movement has brought together people from around the world in an unprecedented call for the recognition of Indigenous rights and an end to a destructive fossil fuel industry. Senecas went in large numbers to “stand with Standing Rock” against DAPL and came home to find another pipeline, NAPL, being planned just upstream from their territories.
Filmmakers Jason Corwin and Tami Watt will be on hand for a Q & A following this theatrical premiere.
