Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
You've been asking, waiting, and wishing, and the day is nearly here. Wes Anderson's latest film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, arrives at Cinemapolis on Friday.
Along with it come two other new limited engagements:
- Enemy marks the second collaboration between director Denis Villeneuve and actor Jake Gyllenhall in the past year. Their previous film, Prisoners, received an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. This time around, they've created another tense thriller that the Village Voice calls "gloriously enigmatic."
- Child's Pose was a big winner at the Stockholm and Berlin film festivals and Romania's official entry to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. This latest example from the thriving Romanian new wave of cinema delves deep into the murky waters of one mother's controlling love of her son.
Romanian-born writer and critic Dr. Saviana Stanescu (Condeescu), Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts at Ithaca College, will lead a special talk back following the 6:55 screening of Child's Pose on Wednesday, April 2.
Also coming on Friday, the launch of a new partnership with our friends at the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival. Fantastic Film Fridays begin with a one-night-only screening of Jeremy Gardner's The Battery at 9:30. This new monthly series, typically held on the fourth Friday of the month, will highlight the best in indie genre filmmaking and is curated by IIFFF founder, Hugues Barbier. Hugues promises more such thoughtful indie genre fare in the coming months. On April 11, director Adam Gierasch will be on hand for a screening of his latest, FRACTURED, and on May 23rd, director Don Thacker brings MOTIVATIONAL GROWTH to the screens at Cinemapolis.
All this, and we're just days away from the beginning of the 2014 Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, which returns to Cinemapolis on Thursday April 3rd to begin screening more than 25 films! This year's festival theme is DISSONANCE. Find the full schedule and more details at the FLEFF site.
