Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Spring Break is upon us, and it brings two new openers with it--one on Friday, and another special pre-holiday bow on Tuesday: - Up first is the grim and gritty look at the troubles of Northern Ireland at one of the heights of violence. Jack O'Connell stars in '71, the feature debut from director Yann Demange. As the title implies, the action takes place one year before the infamous "Bloody Sunday" attacks on civil rights activists in 1972, and follows a dangerous day in the life of a British soldier abandoned by his unit in Belfast. Guy Lodge of Variety calls it, "A vivid, shivery survival thriller that turns the red-brick residential streets of Belfast into a war zone of unconscionable peril."
- On Tuesday, the latest from director Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn) gets a special early opening. Helen Mirren stars as Maria Altmann in Woman in Gold, the true-life story of a Jewish widow's attempt to get back a family heirloom (and famous work of art) stolen by Nazis in war-torn Austria. Part period piece, part courtroom drama, the cast includes Daniel Brühl (A Most Wanted Man, Inglorious Basterds), Charles Dance (Imitation Game) and Ryan Reynolds (The Nines). Critic Mark Wilshin calls it "an unexpectedly moving portrait of restitution, and it’s this battle against both humiliation and the expropriation of the past that makes Woman In Gold a valuable work of art."
Also in the coming week, live performance returns to our screens with the latest installment from National Theatre Live: David Hare’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers. Based on Katherine Boo’s National Book Award winner of the same name, the play tracks the interconnected lives of garbage traders in Annawadi, a modern-day slum of Mumbai, India. Captured live on March 12th, this epic new production will screen at 6:30 pm on Thursday, April 2nd and again at 1:30 pm on Saturday, April 4th.
Don't forget that the special Tuesday opening for Woman in Gold means an extra short week for both Gett and Still Alice - catch them before they're gone...
See you at the movies! |
