| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| By this weekend, spring will have sprung (or so the calendar says), and we've got three new titles sprouting up on our screens:
- Writer-director Atsuko Hirayanagi's Oh Lucy! was a hit at Cannes and was nominated for Best First Feature at this year's Film Independent Spirit Awards. It follows Setsuko, a lonely resident of Tokyo as she takes an English class, discovers an alter ego, and, eventually, heads off on an inter-continental adventure. Manohla Dargis of the NY Times names it a Critic's Pick, calling it "a movie in which the human comedy is by turns tender, plaintive, heartfelt and joyful."
- Off-beat auteur Sally Potter (Orlando, Ginger & Rosa) turns farcical with the fast, biting morsel of a movie, The Party. Skewering British middle-class mores, the film gathers an all-star cast that includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Timothy Spall, and Patricia Clarkson. Anna Smith of Time Out London calls it "bitterly funny, even while dealing with the darkest of subject matters, touching on politics, family, fidelity and sexuality while maintaining a breezy comic tone."
- The early ideas that led to the foundations of Communism are chronicled in The Young Karl Marx, the latest from writer-director Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro). This buddy biopic follows Marx and Engels as they hone their philosophies in mid-19th century Europe. A.O. Scott gives it a NY Times Critic's Pick seal of approval, saying the "great virtue of [the film] is its clarity, its ability to perceive the way the eddies of personal experience flow within the wider stream of history."
And even before we get to the weekend, there are some special events not to miss, including one on WEDNESDAY: |
| Ithaca Shakespeare's “Shakespeare The Rest Of The Year” series continues! The series features classic presentations of Shakespeare plays, alongside adaptations based on the works of the Bard. The 2018 screenings begin with a sneak preview of one the summer's productions. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton star in the 1967 classic rendition of The Taming of The Shrew! The film screens on Wednesday, March 21 at 7 pm and will include an intro from our friends at Ithaca Shakespeare Company.

Our friends from Ithaca Fantastik are back with another installment of their Friday night film series! Mind Game is cult classic from master Japanese animator Masaaki Yuasa. Finally getting this official U.S. theatrical release after 14 years, it uses wildly diverging styles and remarkable color to track the journey of Nishi as he travels to the afterlife and back again. DON'T MISS the opportunity to see this one on the big screen - Friday, March 23rd at 9:30! |
