Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Just as we start to thaw out, our first opener this weekend takes us back on the ice: - Peeking behind the Iron Curtain, Red Army follows Russian hockey phenom Slava Fetisov and the titular medal-winning hockey team whose massive success and symbolic loss at the 1980 games in Lake Placid tell a Cold War story that's bigger than just sport. In Fetisov, director Gabe Polsky finds more than a simple Commies vs. Capitalists caricature and instead crafts a nuanced tale that, as HitFix says, "makes the case that ours is not the only nation that has plenty of citizens who mistakenly long for 'good old days' that may not have actually existed." Hockey fans shouldn't miss this LIMITED ENGAGEMENT.
- Delving into the icy waters of divorce in Israel, Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem is actually the third in a trilogy of films from brother-and-sister team Ronit and Shlomi Eklabetz. Ronit does double duty behind and in front of the camera, reprising her role as Vivian, a woman continuing to struggle with her husband's religion. The struggle leads her to a rabbinical court, where she faces the challenges of acquiring a "gett," the divorce document, which in Jewish religious law, must be presented by a husband to his wife to effect their divorce. Told solely through their time in the courtroom, the film is an immersion in tense bureaucracy, but as David Edelstein of New York Magazine puts it, "The brilliance of Gett...is that, without a shift in tone, [it] begins to seem like a tragedy populated by clowns, its males clinging to ancient laws to compensate for feebleness of character." Don't miss Elkabetz's mesmerizing performance - it's here for one week only!
Also this weekend, our friends from the Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival have arranged a special SNEAK PREVIEW of the indie horror film that everyone is talking about. Two weeks before it opens officially on our screens, catch a one-night only event screening of the supernatural STD allegory from breakout director David Robert Mitchell. IIFFF founder Hugues Barbier will be on hand with trivia and prizes for a special FANTASTIC FILM FRIDAY presentation of IT FOLLOWS, Friday, March 20th at 9:30 pm.
Then on the opposite side of the weekend comes a decidedly more family-friendly program - the latest installment of our Family Classics Picture Show! Re-introducing the Golden Age of Hollywood to parents and kids, the program continues on Sunday, March 22nd at 2pm with a screening of original screwball comedy, Bringing Up Baby. As usual, our emcee David Moreland will be on hand to get families excited about the magic of the movies. Discounted tickets for these special Sunday events are just $3 for adults, $2 for kids, or $10 for a “family pass” of up to five people. The Family Classics Picture Show at Cinemapolis is made possible by lead sponsor Wells Fargo Advisors.
As you plan for the weekend, get in here to catch Timbuktu before it leaves. Its one-week engagement ends on Thursday. Also leaving this week, after NINETEEN WEEKS, is Best Picture winner Birdman. Come to the 9:30 show on Thursday for a special bon voyage treat.
See you at the movies! |

But her husband Elisha will not agree.
