Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
Spring is in the air in Ithaca, but we have just one more Oscar season opening to add to our list of Best Picture nominees to play at Cinempolis. David O. Russell's wild, star-studded crime epic, American Hustle begins on Friday.
Along with it comes two new films. The first is the work of a filmmaker who grew up watching films right here at the Mop. Formerly of Corning, Geoff Moore co-wrote and directed Better Living Through Chemistry, starring Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde. In a recent email, Geoff counted Smoke Signals and Life is Beautiful among those he caught on our screens while attending Corning East High School in the 90s.
The second is the first film by French auteur Alain Guiraudie to receive a U.S. release. Winner of the Un Certain Regard Directing Prize at Cannes, Stranger by the Lake intertwines sex and violence against the back-drop of a lakeside cruising spot. Francophiles take note: this is a one-week only engagement!
