Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
With the clocks jumping ahead an hour, it's time to do some Spring Cleaning at the Mop. We bid adieu to three films this week to make room for three new openers on Friday: - A sold-out hit at last year's Ithaca International Fantastic Film Festival, the vampire mockumentary What We Do In the Shadows is back for a special ONE WEEK ENGAGEMENT. Set in New Zealand, this hilarious vérité look at the foibles of flatmates who just happen to be bloodsuckers is the brainchild of stars/writers/directors Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi (Eagle vs. Shark). The laughs are frequent, but, as Slant says, it's a deft film that "sympathetically renders the small humiliations and inconveniences of life as an old-world vampire struggling with modernity."
- Winner of the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Screenplay at Cannes, Leviathan finally arrives this weekend. A tense script, gripping acting, and gorgeous, desolate photography of coastal Russia combine in the latest work from Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return, Elena). The film follows Kolya, a simple mechanic embroiled in a fight against a corrupt mayor. As the battle escalates, so do the universal themes of power and sacrifice. Says Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian: "So much cinema is content with small fry – minor themes and manageable topics. Leviathan is hunting bigger game. It is a movie with real grandeur."
- Another Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language film also arrives on Friday. Timbuktu is the latest from Mauritanian auteur Abderrahmane Sissako (Life on Earth), who manages to make a beautiful film about a decidedly ugly subject--the jihadist takeover of northern Mali in 2012. As Jay Weissberg of Variety puts it: "In the hands of a master, indignation and tragedy can be rendered with clarity yet subtlety, setting hysteria aside for deeper, more richly shaded tones. Abderrahmane Sissako is just such a master." Don't miss this limited engagement.
Also in the coming week, we welcome back local filmmaker Sue Perlgut for a sneak preview of her new documentary. Connie Cook: A Documentary sheds light on the life and accomplishments of the titular iconic NY State Assemblywoman and Ithacan, who was instrumental in the decriminalization of abortion in New York. Co-directed by former Cinemapolis projectionist Nils Hoover, the film gets a special one-night preview on Wednesday, March 18th at 7 pm. Tickets are $10 and proceeds benefit the production of the film and Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes.
