| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
As Oscar night approaches, there are still more award hopefuls coming to our screen, with TWO new films arriving Friday: - German-born auteur Michael Haneke (Amour) returns to our screens with his latest Palme d'Or nominee, Happy End. In it, he constructs a darkly comic family reunion featuring a remarkable, multi-national cast that includes Isabelle Huppert and Toby Jones. Nikola Grozdanovic of The Playlist says "As an austere and darkly comic family drama, and a scathing commentary about the kind of world our children are living in, Happy End is stunning cinema."
- One of the nominees for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, The Insult is a taut and timely courtroom drama from Lebanon. Tracking the media frenzy that erupts from a spat between a Christian and a Palestinian, The Hollywood Reporter calls it a "gorgeously shot and classily acted feature" and "a fascinating piece of work."
In addition to these new movies, there are also a bunch of special event screenings in the coming week: |
| Following his smash hit production of A Streetcar Named Desire, Benedict Andrews’ ‘thrilling revival’ of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof stars Sienna Miller alongside, Jack O’Connell and Colm Meaney. On a steamy night in Mississippi, a Southern family gather at their cotton plantation to celebrate Big Daddy’s birthday. The scorching heat is almost as oppressive as the lies they tell. Brick and Maggie dance round the secrets and sexual tensions that threaten to destroy their marriage. With the future of the family at stake, which version of the truth is real – and which will win out? Cat on a Hot Tin Roof screens at Cinemapolis on Thursday, February 22nd at 6:30 pm and again on Saturday, February 24th at 1:30 pm.

| Our friends from Ithaca Fantastik are back with another installment of their Friday night film series, and this one is a fright fest! In Derek Nguyen's The Housemaid, a poor, orphaned young woman, finds employment as a housemaid in a crumbling rubber plantation presided over by the emotionally fragile French officer Sebastien Laurent (Jean-Michel Richaud). Soon, a torrid love affair develops between the two – a taboo romance that rouses the ghost of Laurent’s dead wife, who won’t rest until blood flows. Don't miss this one-night-only show! |
