Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
It's pretty clear now that if you want to see award-winning movies, our five auditoria are the place to do it! At last weekend's BAFTA Awards, all the big trophies went to films and performances that have shown on our screens.
This Friday, we add one more of those winners: - Julianne Moore has already won more than a dozen Best Actress awards for her performance in Still Alice, and she's likely the one to beat at next weekend's Oscar ceremony. Playing Alice Howland, Moore carries this striking and subtle film about a successful linguistics professor suffering from early-onset Alzheimer's Disease. Using Lisa Genova's best-selling novel as source material, directing team Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland have crafted what David Ehrlich of TimeOut NY calls, "The rare film possessed with the courage required to shine a light into that abyss knowing full well that down is the only way out."
- Also arriving this week is a special limited engagement of Canada's official submission to the 87th Academy Awards foreign film category. Director Xavier Dolan won the Jury Prize at Cannes for Mommy—a wild, original, and visually stunning warts-and-all celebration of single motherhood. According to Variety's Peter Debruge, "It's uncanny how much Dolan's style and overall solipsism have evolved in five years' time, resulting in a funny, heartbreaking and, above all, original work - right down to its unusual 1:1 aspect ratio - that feels derivative of no one, not even himself."
After the smashing success of Singin' in the Rain last month, the Family Classics Picture Show returns on Sunday at 2pm for a second installment - The Adventures of Robin Hood. This new program re-introduces the Golden Age of Hollywood to parents and kids with a year-long series fun and affordable Sunday matinees, featuring master of ceremonies Dvid Moreland! Discounted tickets for these special Sunday events are just $3 for adults, $2 for kids, or $10 for a “family pass” of up to five people.
With the Oscars less than two weeks away, have made YOUR plans for the big night? On Sunday, February 22nd, we once again present our And the Winner Is... Fundraising Gala. It's a special evening featuring fine food from Ithaca’s favorite restaurants; beer, wine, and signature champagne cocktails; and chances for cinephiles to take home prizes of their own with silent auctions and “guess the winners” contests. Of course, the big awards telecast will be on the big screens, as well. The party runs right through the announcement of the best picture prize!
With two new movies arriving this weekend, we have to say goodbye to another award nominee. Foxcatcher leaves on Thursday, so catch it while you can.
See you at the movies! |
