| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| February continues with TWO surprise openers coming on Friday: - They Shall Not Grow Old is Peter Jackson's commemoration of the Great War. Culled from more than 100 hours of archival footage from World War I, the film is a technological marvel, adding sound, color, and the actual voices of veterans to create a whole new way of seeing life in the trenches. Robbie Collin of the Telegraph calls it "an historical portrait of matchless immediacy and power, in which young souls lost in a century-old war stare out across the years and meet our gaze."
- Nicole Kidman delivers an awards-worthy performance in Karyn Kusama's tense crime thriller, Destroyer. The film tracks the decline of Kidman's Erin Bell, a police detective struggling to recover from a botched sting operation earlier in her career. Peter Debruge of Variety says Kidman "has always been a chameleon, but in this case, she doesn’t merely change her color (or don a fake nose, à la “The Hours”); she disappears into an entirely new skin, rearranging her insides to fit the character’s tough hide."
All that, and some special events are on the way, as well, including one OFF-SITE THIS THURSDAY: |
