| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans!
It's our favorite time of year - award winners and award contenders stack up every December, and that means popular titles and lines at the box office, so please plan to arrive at the theater 30 minutes prior to showtime. And plan to catch the two new films joining our slate of hits this Friday: |
| - Swedish auteur Ruben Östlund (Force Majeure) returns to our screens with The Square, another piece of pitch-black satire and winner of the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Pulling apart the world of contemporary art (among other things), the film uses the opening of a conceptual exhibit at a museum as a setting to poke holes in modern standards of taste, sex, and money. Jessica Kiang of The Playlist calls it "an excoriating razor-burn of a movie that deploys drollery like an instrument of torture."
- Also opening in a special limited engagement is another winner from Cannes, BPM (120 Battements par Minute). This compelling ensemble drama chronicles the formation of the the French chapter of ACT UP as a reaction to the AIDS crisis of the late 1980s. Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian says it "has what its title implies: a heartbeat. It is full of cinematic life."
On top of these new movies, we also have a few special event screenings on the way, including one even before the weekend on THIS Thursday: |
| Thu, Dec 7 @ 7:00 pm FREE SCREENING featuring Q & A w/ producer Jeff Cohen
The new documentary “All Governments Lie: Truth, Deception and the Spirit of I.F. Stone” is co-produced by Jeff Cohen of Ithaca College’s Park Center for Independent Media. The movie – which has been seen in film festivals and on public TV channels across the globe (but is too controversial for PBS) – celebrates independent journalists who’ve exposed U.S. government deception. Stars include Amy Goodman & Nermeen Shaikh (Democracy Now!), Glenn Greenwald & Jeremy Scahill (The Intercept), Cenk Uygur & Ana Kasparian (The Young Turks), Carl Bernstein (Watergate), Michael Moore, John Carlos Frey and the legendary I.F. (“Izzy”) Stone. The Izzy Award for independent media, presented annually at Ithaca College, is named in memory of Stone.

| The Family Classics Picture Show wraps up its 3rd year on Sunday, December 10th at 2pm with a screening of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.
To get families excited about the magic of the movies, each matinee features an introduction by actor, magician, and movie buff David Moreland and includes custom enrichment guides to help continue the conversation after the credits roll.
Discounted tickets for these special Sunday events are just $3 for adults, $2 for kids, or $10 for an entire family. The Family Classics Picture Show at Cinemapolis is made possible by lead sponsor The Ainslie Reilly Group at Morgan Stanley, with additional support from Mama Goose. |
| | While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in soon to catch Last Flag Flying, Novitiate, and Wonderstruck. They all have their last screening on Thursday, December 7th!
