| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans: |
| The race toward Oscar season continues with a trio of new hopefuls arriving on screen this Friday: - Former child star (and current Hollywood "bad boy") Shia LeBeouf partners with documentarian Alma Har'el for the deeply personal Honey Boy. Written by LeBeouf while he was in rehab, the story of a son grappling with both his own demons and those of his father also marks the narrative debut for director Har'el. Gregory Ellwood of The Playlist says it "may center on the impressive portrayals of three talented actors, but it’s the woman behind the camera that makes it soar. You simply can’t wait to see what she does next."
- A hit at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, Waves is only the third feature from burgeoning American auteur, Trey Edward Shults. It's a strikingly expressionistic film that weaves together narratives from inside a family struggling in the aftermath of tragedy. Variety's Peter Debruge raves: "Propelled by color, energy, electronic music and a quartet of career-making performances, here is that rare sort of cinematic achievement that innovates at every turn."
- In Fabric is the latest giallo-tinged thriller from British filmmaker Peter Strickland (Duke of Burgundy). With stylistic dashes of horror, comedy, and the supernatural, this tale of a haunted dress defies easy explanation. Keith Uhlich of The Hollywood Reporter says simply, "No one makes movies like Peter Strickland."
