| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| Somehow the first month of 2019 is almost behind us already, and it finishes up with TWO new openers coming on Friday: - John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan star as the titular classic comedy duo in Stan & Ollie. Taking a snapshot from the end of their careers, the film follows Laurel & Hardy’s 1950s British stage show tour. Oscar buzz is following Reilly’s performance as Oliver Hardy, and Alonso Duralde of The Wrap says “this film celebrates both the artist and the tenacity it takes to remain one.”
- Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda returns to our screens with the winner of the Palme d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Shoplifters. Kore-eda once again focuses on the rhythms of family life, this time delving into the mysteries of a clan of thieves who take in an abandoned child they find on the street. The film is a NY Times Critic’s Pick, with Manohla Dargis calling it “a perfect story about being human.”
On top of our great line-up, don't miss the special events on the way, including one THIS THURSDAY: |

The year of NTL gets under way with Alan Bennett’s sharp and hilarious new play Allelujah! Filmed live at London’s Bridge Theatre during its limited run, don’t miss this acclaimed production full of ‘singalongs and stinging wit’ (Guardian).
The Beth, an old fashioned cradle-to-grave hospital serving a town in Yorkshire, is threatened with closure as part of an efficiency drive. A documentary crew, eager to capture its fight for survival, follows the daily struggle to find beds on the Dusty Springfield Geriatric Ward, and the triumphs of the old people’s choir. One of Britain’s most celebrated writers, Alan Bennett’s plays include The History Boys, The Lady in the Van and The Madness of George III, all of which were also seen on film. Allelujah! is his tenth collaboration with award-winning director Nicholas Hytner.

| | While you’re planning your next week at the movies, get in soon to catch Ben Is Back and Mary Queen of Scots. They both have their last screenings THIS Thursday, January 24th!
