| | Greetings Cinemapolitans!
The Christmas holiday approaches and there are just a few seats left for our annual Christmas Day Benefit Brunch at the Movies. The holiday also usually means a big day for award hopefuls, and this year is no exception as we open THREE Oscar contenders on Friday: - Todd Haynes (Far from Heaven) has constructed a beautiful and timely love story with his latest period piece, Carol. Already nominated for four Golden Globes, including best picture, it's sure to make the Oscar shortlist. Justin Chang of Variety calls Carol "an exquisitely drawn, deeply felt love story that teases out every shadow and nuance of its characters' inner lives with supreme intelligence, breathtaking poise and filmmaking craft of the most sophisticated yet accessible order."
- Last year's winner for best lead actor, Eddie Redmayne returns to our screens with another remarkable and transformative performance in The Danish Girl. Skillfully directed by Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) and co-starring Swedish phenom Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, Testament of Youth), the film tells the remarkable true story of Lili Elbe, one of the first people to ever undergo gender confirmation surgery. Variety's Peter Debruge says "There's no denying that Hooper and screenwriter Lucinda Coxon have delivered a cinematic landmark, one whose classical style all but disguises how controversial its subject matter still remains."
- Finally, another award nominated performance from Michael Fassbender arrives in the form of Danny Boyle's (Slumdog Millionaire) latest, Steve Jobs. With a script by Aaron Sorkin and a supporting cast that includes Kate Winslet, Jeff Daniels, and Seth Rogen, the film gives us a glimpse into three keystone moments in the life of the Apple founder. According to IndieWire's Rodrigo Perez, it's a "deliriously quick-footed and orchestrally pitched character study, Steve Jobs is an ambitious, deeply captivating portrait of the high cost of genius."

| As we reach the end of another year at the theater, I continue to be humbled by the support of our community. Thanks to the dedication of a truly devoted board, the passion of our founders, and the continued diligence of our hard-working staff, Cinemapolis will be celebrating 30 years of independent film in Ithaca in 2016.
This milestone would simply not have been possible without the remarkable generosity and devotion of our members. As you look toward making your end-of-year charitable contributions, I hope you'll consider making a donation to the Cinemapolis Annual Fund Campaign.
Your tax-deductible contribution guarantees that Cinemapolis will continue to be more than just a movie theater. Gifts to the annual fund feed the dream of an art house cinema that engages and enriches the community with a year-round program of films that entertain, educate and enhance our quality of life.
An annual gift of $75 or more ($150 or more for a couple) also makes you a member of Cinemapolis, with all the benefits that come along with the membership card. |
| While you're planning your next week at the movies, get in here to see Chi-Raq, Heart of a Dog, Janis, and Macbeth soon. They all leave THIS Thursday, December 24th! |
