Greetings, Cinemapolitans!

The Christmas Holiday is nearly here, and three massive awards contenders are coming with it:
  • Guillermo del Toro returns to our screens—and to his Pan's Labyrinth territory—with the beautiful Cold War fantasy, The Shape of Water.  Nominated for seven Golden Globes, this mash-up of genres follows the unlikely romance between a mysterious sea creature and a member of the late-night cleaning crew at the government lab where it's being held. Sally Hawkins (Maudie) shines as Elisa, the jazz-loving janitor whose forbidden relationship draws the ire of Michael Shannon's Agent Strickland. A.O. Scott of the NY Times gives it the Critic's Pick seal of approval, calling it, simply, "altogether wonderful."

  • Gary Oldman is already winning awards for his acclaimed performance as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. Director Joe Wright (Atonement) focuses on Churchill's role in the lead up to the evacuation of Dunkirk and keeps his focus on Oldman's remarkable interpretation of Britain's great statesman.  Gregory Ellwood of the Playlist calls it "a tour de force portrayal that will define his body of work for decades to come."

  • And finally, Matt Damon gets small in Downsizing, the new social satire from Alexander Payne (Nebraska, The Descendants). Set in a near future where shrinking people is a new solution to humanity's viability on Earth, the film follows Damon's Paul Safranek, an everyman whose transition from tall to small becomes an epic journey. Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter calls it "a deeply humane film that, like the best Hollywood classics, feels both entirely of its moment and timeless."
Plan ahead for the holiday - you have just three days left to register for our Christmas tradition:

At noon, on Christmas Day (Monday, December 25th), join other Cinemapolitans for a special Thai brunch and movie to benefit the theater’s Annual Fund.

Your $50 ticket, which must be purchased by December 22, will include admission to one of the five movies at the theatre as well as a delicious assortment of food from Tamarind (Full menu here).

While you're planning your next week at the movies, be sure to get in soon to catch The Breadwinner, Jane, Loving Vincentand Wonder Wheel. They all have their last screening on Thursday, December 21st!

 See you at the movies!
