| | Greetings, Cinemapolitans! |
| We head through the holidays with a slate of award hopefuls, including THREE films opening on Friday:
- Nominated for FIVE Golden Globe awards, The Favourite is the latest from Greek absurdist Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster). Taking on a more farcical tone than his previous work, the film imagines the real-life jockeying for power and influence in the later days of the court of Queen Anne. The stellar cast includes Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and a hilarious turn from Olivia Colman as the Queen. A.O. Scott of the NY Times gives it the Critic's Pick seal of approval, calling it "a wildly entertaining, bracingly cynical comedy of royal manners."
- Two of last year's Oscar nominees duke it out as rival queens in the epic Mary Queen of Scots. Saoirse Ronin stars as Mary Stuart opposite Margot Robbie's Elizabeth I in a lushly photographed account of the 16th century struggle for the throne. Kimber Myers of the Playlist says it's "no staid, stuffy period drama, as restrained as the breathing of corseted women. Instead, this a vital film, whose lace-trimmed bosom heaves with life."
- A likely contender for all the awards this season, A Star is Born arrives for a special holiday engagement. Bradley Cooper writes, directs, and co-stars with Lady Gaga in the retelling of the ageless story of music, celebrity, and love. Robbie Collin of the Telegraph calls it "electrifyingly fresh – a well-known melody given vivid, searching new force."
